In 1889, Captain Ditlev Torm founded the steamship company that bears his nameThe son of a Copenhagen ship broker, he first went to sea at the age of 14. Ashore, and a veteran of the sea by the age of 53, Captain Torm operated several small steamers in the herring trade between Scotland and Königsberg, Germany. It wa
s the success of this venture and the promise of a rising freight market that led the captain to form a limited company composed of private investors.That was in January. The fledgling company's first vessel, the 1,400 dwt s/s Alice, was built at Howaldtswerke in Kiel and delivered by December of the same year.
Since then, TORM has ridden out financial ups and downs, depressions, recessions, oil crises, world wars and numerous local conflicts and still continued to earn a reasonable profit and plot out a course for future growth.
There is no reason to believe future world events will be any kinder to shipping than those in the past. But as we proceed throughout our second century of service, we do so with the strength and resilience earned through nearly 115 years o
f experience.

Theolog, er en Søn af Dampskibsreder D. E. T. og Elise Helene Mathilde f. Zoëga. Han blev født 24. Avg. 1870 i Chefoo i Kina. 1874 toge hans Forældre fast Bolig i Kjøbenhavn, og 1882 blev han optaget i Metropolitanskolen, fra hvilken han blev dimitteret 1888. Efter 1894 at have underkastet sig den theologiske Embedsexamen virkede han en Tid som Manuduktør i Kjøbenhavn, men fra Okt. 1895 til Dec. 1897 opholdt han sig for Studiernes Skyld i Italien, Tyskland og England. 1900-ideltog han i Konkurrencen om det kirkehistoriske Professorat og udgav i den Anledning en Afhandling om Novatianus («En kritisk Fremstilling af N.s Liv og Forfattervirksomhed samt Eftervisning af den novatianske Bevægelses Omfang og Betydning» 1901). 1901 erhvervede han den theologiske Licentiatgrad for en Afhandling om «Valentinianismens Historie og Lære». 1899 begyndte han, sammen med Cand. theol. J. O. Andersen og Lic. theol. C. E. Fløystrup, Udgivelsen af en ny Række af «Theologisk Tidsskrift», og i dette og andre kirkelige Blade har han skrevet forskjellige Afhandlinger og Kritikker. Han er Medlem af Bestyrelsen for Israelsmissionen og har efter Erhvervelsen af Licentiatgraden som Privatdocent holdt Forelæs
ninger paa Universitetet. 1903 udnævntes han til midlertidig Lærer i nytestamentlig Exegese under det theologiske Fakultet.
